Certified Veterinary Technician
DESCRIPTION: The veterinary technician’s role in this practice is to promote a friendly and professional environment where emphasis is placed on quality medical care, client education and teamwork. The veterinary technician is instrumental in providing support to, clients, patients and doctors. This position is demanding and rewarding, but frequently stressful. Whatever the circumstances, it is the technician’s duty to project the competence and empathy that is fundamental to our practice philosophy. SALARY: Varies by skill level QUALIFICATIONS: Education Required/Preferred: High school graduate or equivalent is required. For “licensed” technician the addition of active National/State status is required. Experience Required/Preferred: Three (3) years veterinary technician experience is preferred. Skills/Knowledge/Abilities: Varies by skill level; refer to skill level listing KEY RESPONSIBILITIES/ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: • All aspects of exam room set up/break-down/maintenance • Greet clients • Escort clients/pets to exam room • Get patient history/updates • Perform diagnostic tests when expected • Maintain medical record compliance • Give appropriate hand-outs • Enter charges • Ready medication or patients (refills, post-exam, post-sx) • Write/type go home instructions for patients (post-exam, post-sx) • Print/review estimates for patients • All aspects of laboratory submissions • Client phone correspondence including return existing and new client calls and obtain phone reports • Patient admissions and process • Appropriate pre-op medications, exams, lab tests, IV catheters • All aspects of surgery room and equipment (set-up/break-down/maintenance) • Manage surgery time (technician breaks, assignments) • Post-op surgery responsibility (Verify IV catheters pulled, charges and go-homes done correctly, clients have been called, drug and surgery logs completed, patient charts completed, and pets are clean) • Complete surgery bulletins, get initialed and faxed • Change ultrasonic cleaner, cold sterile, trach tube wash, and baralym on a schedule • Provides all general aspects of after hours and on call service • Be able to work at other SAVS facilities if needed OTHER RESPONSIBILITIES: • Establishes the tempo for the clinic by being aware of potential problems in the appointment and surgery schedules (alerting doctor and client when applicable) • Continuing education for yourself and others • Knowledge of/ability to orient others to OSHA and Safety program • Professional, empathetic representative of SAVS to public and rDVM’s • Emphasizes working as a Team REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS/ORGANIZATIONAL STRUCTURE: Reports to Clinical Coordinator
